TL;DR
Pump-action Rival blaster with five 5-round rotating cylinders for 25 rounds without a reload. Fires high-impact foam balls at ~90 FPS, which is faster and harder-hitting than any dart blaster in the Nerf lineup. Built for teen and adult tactical play; not appropriate for kids under 14.

Pros
- 25 rounds before reload via the rotating cylinder system - almost no reload friction
- High-impact rounds hit harder than darts and give the blaster real psychological weight
- Pump-action mechanism is reliable and lasts through hundreds of rental cycles
- Looks and feels like serious tactical equipment - the corporate-event crowd loves it
- Better outdoor performance than any dart blaster, especially in light wind
Cons
- Eye protection is required. Period. We provide it in every rental.
- Weight at 5 lb fatigues kids and many adults across a long match
- Rival ammo costs more per round than dart ammo and is harder to retrieve in tall grass
- Not appropriate for under-14 players; we will decline to rent it for younger groups
Hands-on review: a different category of blaster
The Rival Roundhouse does not belong in the same conversation as the Infinite or the Pro X. It is a different category of blaster: high-impact foam rounds instead of darts, pump-action instead of motorized or magazine-fed, and a built-in age restriction that limits its place in our rental mix. We carry it because for the right rental - adult corporate, older teen tournament, dad-and-his-friends backyard game - nothing else delivers the same experience.
The signature feature is the five rotating 5-round cylinders. When you empty the active cylinder, you rotate the next one into position via a single thumb motion. That is 25 rounds of continuous fire from a pump-action blaster with no traditional reload step. The first time a player figures out the rotation flow, the round changes - suddenly the player who would have had to retreat to reload is still pressing forward.
Build quality is the highest of any blaster in our rental fleet. The Roundhouse is heavy for a reason: real metal in the pump linkage, reinforced shell, weighted grip. After two years of rentals, our oldest unit shows scuffs on the shell and zero functional wear. We expect these to outlast every other blaster in the kit.
The eye-protection requirement is not a marketing line. Rival rounds at 90 FPS into an unprotected eye is a medical event. We include eye protection in every Roundhouse rental, we require it on the field, and we will pause a game and reset if a player removes it. This is the one safety rule we do not negotiate on.
Real-world use in NBRVA Battle Kits
The Roundhouse is an upgrade-tier blaster, not a default. We add one to the Big Battle Kit (16-player, $249) on request for 14+ groups, and we run the entire 8-player Battle Kit as a Rival-only loadout for adult corporate offsites who specifically want the tactical feel. The Rival-only kit is the most-requested specialty configuration in our corporate inventory.
For outdoor corporate events at parks with open sight lines - Pocahontas State Park, Bryan Park's big lawn, the back fields at Deep Run - the Roundhouse is the right tool. The high-impact rounds carry through light wind in a way darts do not, and the visual of a pump-action volley is the moment in the event that everyone remembers.
For indoor venues, we use the Roundhouse with care. The high-impact rounds can mark walls if they hit at flat angles, and we do not rent it for indoor venues with delicate finishes (art galleries, restored historic spaces, etc.). For warehouse, gym, and pole-barn indoor venues, it is fine.
Comparison to alternatives we have rented
Within the Rival line, the Roundhouse competes with the Rival Nemesis (motorized, 100-round hopper) and the Rival Kronos (pump-action, 5-round). Nemesis is the high-end option at $200+ and we have not added it to the rental fleet yet because of the price point and the battery management overhead. Kronos at $25 is the entry-level Rival and the right call if you only want to try the platform before committing.
Against dart blasters, Roundhouse and Infinite are not direct competitors. Different ammo, different age targets, different rental contexts. We carry both and we recommend both - to different customers.
Outside the Nerf brand, Adventure Force and Buzz Bee have entered the high-impact-round market. Neither has matched Rival's build quality or ammo consistency, in our experience. Stick with the Rival platform for high-impact play.
Who should buy this
Buy the Roundhouse if your household has teens 14+ and adults who want the most authentic tactical-feel blaster on the market without crossing into paintball. It is the closest a $60 purchase gets to a paintball marker without the cleanup, the pain, or the venue rental.
Skip the Roundhouse if your players include anyone under 14, if you have a household member who will not wear eye protection consistently, or if your primary use is chaotic free-for-all play with kids. The age restriction and safety profile do not bend.
If you are in Richmond and want to test the Roundhouse before buying, ask for a Rival-only upgrade on your Big Battle Kit rental. The $249 base price covers the kit; we add Rival inventory for groups who confirm 14+ ages on the waiver.

FAQ
Is the Roundhouse safe?
Yes, when used with eye protection by players age 14 and older. The high-impact rounds at 90 FPS require eye protection - this is non-negotiable in our rentals and should be a household rule for any Rival ownership.
Can I mix Roundhouse with dart blasters in the same game?
Generally no. The impact-class difference makes the dart blasters feel disadvantaged. We run Roundhouse games as Rival-only loadouts in our rentals.
What is the maximum effective range?
Practical accuracy is good out to about 40 feet; rounds carry further but with degraded accuracy. Wind has less effect on Rival rounds than on darts.
How fast do the cylinders rotate?
Each cylinder change is a single thumb motion that takes under a second. The full 25-round cycle empties in about 20 seconds of aggressive fire.
Can I rent the Roundhouse in Richmond?
Yes, as an upgrade to the Big Battle Kit for confirmed 14+ groups. We provide eye protection and require it on the field. Corporate offsites are our most common Roundhouse rental.
